The UN Ocean Conference (UNOC 2025) will take place from the 9th to the 13th of June 2025 in Nice, France. It is the third United Nations Ocean Conference and will be co-hosted by France and Costa Rica. The international conference aims to accelerate and mobilise action to conserve and sustainably use the ocean, seas and marine resources, and will bring together ocean experts from political, scientific, civil society and business communities, as well as representatives of international institutions and indigenous peoples, in support of the conference objective: the adoption of a "Nice Ocean Action Plan". UNOC 2025 therefore contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 "Life Below Water" (SDG14).

The RV METEOR as a German contribution

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is contributing to UNOC 2025 by presenting the German research vessel METEOR as an event location for the international community. The METEOR, co-financed by the BMBF and the German Research Foundation (DFG), will be available in the marina in Nice from 8th to 12th of July 2025. Stakeholders from politics, science, business and civil society are invited to book the vessel for UNOC 2025 events, including side events, high-level events, receptions, press conferences or tours of the ship. The events can be held in various rooms or on deck. To qualify, events must align with the objectives of UNOC 2025, be independently organised and financed, and involve at least one German partner. Further details about the rooms on the vessel are available by clicking on the buttons in the vessel plan. Please click on the application button to find details of the conditions and the selection process.

How does the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) support a sustainable ocean?

Marine research is the research for our future. The ocean serves as the planet’s primary carbon sink, playing a crucial role in the global carbon cycle. It is a fundamental source of life, providing nourishment, energy and securing economic activities. Recognising the significance of marine ecosystems the BMBF has been supporting research that aims to sustainably manage and protect the ocean. The federal government established the research programme MARE:N, which lays the foundation for future-oriented marine research, innovations and technologies, and to encourage international cooperation. The BMBF is supporting international collaborations within the UN-Ocean decade through various research projects and is an active member in the "Ocean Decade Alliance".

At least one German partner must be involved in the event (exclusion criterion). Furthermore, at least one international partner and one scientific partner should be involved. The concept should contribute to at least one of the following aspects:

  • Contributing to the goals of the UN Ocean Conference 2025
  • Enhancing knowledge transfer
  • Enhancing international cooperation
  • Promoting young scientists

At METEOR, we would like to offer as many different formats as possible. We particularly welcome events including the following elements:

  • Interactive formats (audience participation, live and/or online)

  • Addressing and involving a diverse audience

The RV METEOR, as an event-location on behalf of the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research), will be present in the harbour of Nice from the 09. -12.06.2025.

We offer four time slots of two hours each on a daily basis. Shorter events within these two hours are possible, as well as longer and combined time slots, e.g. an entire afternoon and evening or a series of events on the available days.

When submitting your event proposal, you have the option to request a specific time slot and alternative timeframes. We will make every effort to approach these requests. However, to ensure the coordination of events at METEOR in terms of time and content, we offer alternative times if necessary.
